My daughter 36 years ago at the age of 16 suffered from traumatic brain injury from an accident. She was in a coma for months and started therapy to go from an infant like state, relearning everything from walking, talking and thinking again. With ongoing therapy over the years and only a few months after her accident, she learned to walk again, even though her gait was a little awkward and her balance was too, she was able to get around. Over the years gong back with therapy, she would plateau and you would see very little or no improvement.
After years, I decided to try physical therapy again to see if they could improve her walk. Paul, her current therapist at Health in Motion evaluated her issues and determined it had very little to do with the muscles. She was very strong but her brain became accustomed to walking the wrong way. Then he had to figure a way to retrain her brain to get the proper balance. After 20 sessions, and working with her at home, I am so pleased to say she has improved by at least 90%! Out of curiosity we had her try to run, which was even more awkward than her walk. He never worked directly on running, but just by retraining the brain to feel the correct balance it carried over into running. I have to say, it brought a tear to my eyes to see the improvement there too. Just to see the elated smile on her face is hard to explain. I know from working with therapists myself, it is important to continue doing what you have been taught to be able to maintain improvements. Paul not only worked on her balance issues but had to council her on putting her excuses behind her and focusing on her improvements.
